Small Balsa Wood Sculptures

Small Balsa Wood Sculptures

Artist Statement:
Rotation: I wanted to play with the concept of repetition, while not conforming to the natural rounded nature. I chose to create two stair step pieces that would float above each other, facing opposite directions to display the repeating pattern. In addition, the design of a braid was something formally I wished to create to add texture, as well as a more slowing element to counter-balance the geometric shapes of the rectangular wood pieces. The hot glue was added to not only fill the empty space, but to add a more visually appealing element with texture, and continue with the round about concept of circular motion in a more unconventional matter.

Artist Statement:
Empty Stance- was inspired for my love for geometric shapes and architecture. I wanted to play with space, so the base of the sculpture is supported by straight pins, allowing for a hollow underneath. In addition, I wanted to not only include 90 degree angles, but also being in a more circular aspect. Both platforms floating on either side of the base are rounded in nature, be it entirely, or partially. From there, I wanted to add height and have aspects of the design essentially floating in space, so I continued the rounded design by creating balls of tracing paper, wrapped in clear packing tape to add texture, and a gloss element to be more visually appealing. The masking tape was added for aesthetic purposes, to create clean lines in creates, and cut the space with more straight edges.
