Small Balsa Wood Sculptures

Artist Statement:
Rotation: I wanted to play with the concept of repetition, while not conforming to the natural rounded nature. I chose to create two stair step pieces that would float above each other, facing opposite directions to display the repeating pattern. In addition, the design of a braid was something formally I wished to create to add texture, as well as a more slowing element to counter-balance the geometric shapes of the rectangular wood pieces. The hot glue was added to not only fill the empty space, but to add a more visually appealing element with texture, and continue with the round about concept of circular motion in a more unconventional matter.

Artist Statement:
Empty Stance- was inspired for my love for geometric shapes and architecture. I wanted to play with space, so the base of the sculpture is supported by straight pins, allowing for a hollow underneath. In addition, I wanted to not only include 90 degree angles, but also being in a more circular aspect. Both platforms floating on either side of the base are rounded in nature, be it entirely, or partially. From there, I wanted to add height and have aspects of the design essentially floating in space, so I continued the rounded design by creating balls of tracing paper, wrapped in clear packing tape to add texture, and a gloss element to be more visually appealing. The masking tape was added for aesthetic purposes, to create clean lines in creates, and cut the space with more straight edges.

Map Relief Sculpture

Artist Statement:
The concept behind this design was a little more personal. I wanted to have a contrasting color pallet, having a harsh contrast between the bright vibrant colors of the 'flowers', and the harsh black background, and the invasion of white. The idea behind it was sexual orientation. I wished to illustrate this battle between sexuality and the repression. The bright colors are piled together at the top of the sculpture, and seemingly flow or fall down to the base, alluding to the overcoming of color and washing away the black.
Because I myself struggle with sexual identity, I wanted to make this to present how I am slowly coming to terms with it, as the repression (black) is being forced out or slowly more nonexistent. The addition of the white within the black to to show a weakening in the strength of the harsh dark color, and that the white will eventually turn to color as well. The sculpture itself is 5'9", the same height as myself, creating a more humanistic and stoic quality to the piece.
The napkins were utilized for their bright saturated colors, and the texture they brought to the composition. As well, I created waves of paper to create the rapid in and out, up and down of my heart rate when speaking about the subject, doubles with my anxiety.

Masked Identity

"To be able to strip away this royal persona, and allow my subjects to see my true face would be the fall of the royal empire"

Materials List:
  • Wire
  • Burlap
  • Tracing Paper
  • Gel Medium
  • Hot Glue
  • Bicycle Tire Inner-tube
  • Fabric
  • Painters Tape
  • White Gesso
  • Wooden Dowel

Artist Statement:
A mask is somewhat of a practice to hide behind a face other than our own, and conceal our identity from onlookers. I wished to take somewhat of a different approach. A lot of my work focuses on stripping away the boundaries set, and exposing the more exposed, natural state. I have always felt that I needed to hide behind this picture perfect persona, alluding to everyone else that I am strong, confident, and put together. Recently, I have proceeded to take steps forward to allowing my true self to be reveled, and I wished to convey that in this.
I wished to keep it simple, and clean. I aid in this with the bright white pieces of the secondary mask, as well as the fabric, to represent an element of purity. The burlap represents this element of rawness, allowing a sense of vulnerability, then emphasized by the exposed arm, and large crack in the background. The owl holds a special meaning to me for its representation of wisdom. I have always strived to be well educated, and hope to someday be as wise as those who have helped me on my journey to the present, and beyond. In the composition, it stands for the centering or a grounding element of the figure. The secondary mask held in front of the formal mask is to act as a barrier between the figure and the outside world. The wold is harsh and judgmental, and to leave the comfort of our homes, or our safe places is placing us in a place of vulnerability, and the mask is there to aid in the defense against onlookers.

Memento
Materials List:
  • Wire
  • Chain

Artist Statement:
A memento is defined as an object kept to remind us of a personal moment or person. I am thankful enough to be able to struggle with any particular memory that stuck out in my head that was a moment of pain or sorrow. On the contrary, I had a difficult time conducting a memory that was so impactful, that I could manifest a small sculpture of object that I felt related enough to one moment or memory. As I struggled, I had a moment where I realized how much I missed special individuals since I moved away to college. The first person that came to mind was my best friend. Though we only live two hours way from each other, the hustle and bustle of life has taken over, leaving empty communication and lack of contact, so I wanted to create something that kept her a little closer.
'In Plain Sight' is a play on a monocle. I wanted to create a rendition of sorts for something that aids in or allows sight, for she is the reason I am here, with the academic status that I have. The first two years of high school I struggles a lot: personally, socially, and academically. Near the end of my sophomore year, things only became wore, as I started to fail all classes, and would inevitably be removed from the academically rigorous program I was in. She stepped in and encouraged me to apply for another program that would take part the remaining two years of high school. Because of that push, I applied and was accepted. The next year, I was a full time college student, allowing me to graduate with my two year degree as I graduated from high school simultaneously. This opportunity was right in front of me, and I just needed a little help seeing it, and allow myself to dig myself out of the hole I had put myself in.
The eye piece is supported by a small sturdy pice of wire to aid in lifting it to the eye. From there, with in the spiral of the eye piece a small piece of wire jutting out. At the end of the chain that is attached to the monocle, is another pice of sturdy wire, looped so that it can grasp the stray wire, and create an according effect, to narrow the focus of the viewer.

3-Dimensions to 2-Dimensions

Artist Statement:
I waned to create a visually conceptual piece for this assignment. I decided to manipulate the piece that meant the most to me, and create a rotational composition that tied into the spiral that is part of the piece. In the center of the composition, through overlapping and mirrored images, is a wire knot.  I did this to create a focal point in the piece, that then would sent the eye in any particular direction and then rotate counterclockwise. The rotation of the image is aided by the spokes that spew out of the center, that then curve and protrude outward.
