Transformation Drawing

Transformation Drawing

Artist Statement:
The challenge was to take a single, large piece of paper and transform the surface at least 90% over the course of 6 weeks. I began by simply putting a ground on the paper, and had no intended outcome other than to cover the surface or drastically change it each week. I am always trying to find ways to take standard things- such as a piece of paper- and make it 3-dimensional. I opted for the second week to keep a similar shape, but alter the color pallet. After I was relatively happy with the outcome of the second week, it was then decided to make it sculptural- I cut half of the paper into long strips, while maintaining the second half to present it as a 'wind chime'. After that, I determined to project a complete overhaul of the piece. I covered it in burlap, masked the remainder of the color with strips of masking tape, and spray painted it black. I then took the strips that hung from the last drawing, flipped them so the plain white backing was facing outward, and glued them to hand from across the overall piece, and took another strip and proceeded to illustrate the mental state I was in at the time. Then, in a practice of panic, I utilized my packaging materials, cut the paper in half, folded, and wrapped the two bricks in shrink wrap. As the final transformation, I unpacked each of them, and dissected the two the create a while new piece, presenting remnants of previous weeks works.

In terms of Research and Inspiration, I pulled more from film and entertainment. I never really had a set design for each of the drawings and just went with what I felt the paper was telling me it needed to do. With the variety of bright colors to dark displays, and the winding and curving of the drawing, I pulled from these three infamous directors for inspiration:

  • Tim Burton
  • Stanley Kubrick
  • Wes Anderson
In addition, under Long Term Project Presentation:  https://zjacques.blogspot.com/2018/10/long-term-project-presentation.html , there holds various images of research and inspiration for the majority of my work, and what I hold to be most impactful and important.
